Product Description
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic, Moving   September 6, 2010
J. Meegan (Silicon Valley, CA)
As far as I can tell, there are three types of YA books out there: the cheap knock-offs of popular books with only the barest semblance of a plot; the engaging, well-written stories we all enjoy and might remember a few weeks after reading but usually don't; and the ones that slip under your skin and haunt you long after you've put them down. Shiver is definitely of the latter category.

Steifvater's writing is quiet, contained, and yet she manages to say so much more with fewer words than most other writers I've come across. Reading Shiver was, at times, akin to reading a long work of poetry. I found it was hard for me to read it in one stretch -- I'd read a few chapters and then put the book aside to absorb what I'd just read before picking it up again. I can't say I enjoyed reading this book...it was, at times, too raw and too painful to be comfortable. But I still loved every bit of it.

As some other reviewers have pointed out, the lack of strong, supportive adult characters was unsettling. Grace's parents were just as neglectful of their daughter as Sam's parents were of him...only with a lot less drama and over a much longer stretch of time. But I feel this was intentionally done to show how apart both Grace and Sam stood from those around them...and why they were so connected to one another from the start.

If you're looking for something fun and light to read, keep looking. If you are looking for a great story that might make you uncomfortable and will definitely make you think, pick up Shiver. And be prepared for something totally different from most YA books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   September 6, 2010

A wonderful mix of forbiden love and the need to overcome all odds to obtain it. I could not put this book down and recommend this to anyone who enjoys a supernaturally stunning romance.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful story   September 6, 2010
mummazappa (Perth, Australia)
From the back cover:
The Cold. Grace has spent years watching the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf - her wolf - watches back. he feels deeply familiar to her but she doesn't know why. The Heat. Sam has lived two lives. As a wolf, he keeps the silent company of the girl he loves. And then, for a short time each year, he is human, never daring to talk to Grace...until now. The Shiver. For Grace and Sam, love has always been kept at a distance. But once it's spoken, it cannot be denied. Sam must fight to stay human - and Grace must fight to keep him - even if it means taking on the scars of the past, the fragility of the present, and the impossibility of the future.

Review:
The first thing I want to say about this book is that Maggie Stiefvater can write. Sometimes the prose gets a little bit carried away with itself ("I was a leaking womb"?????) but for the most part it is lyrical and graceful and sets a beautiful tone as the background to this star-crossed lovers romance. I love a YA paranormal romance, and frankly, I'm not all that fussy about it having to have great writing - I read them for escapist purposes and can overlook just about anything so long as the story is engaging. But in this case, it is really nice to come across a YA book that is not only a good story, but the characters, plot and writing are well developed and polished.

The narration is told from both Grace and Sam's perspectives. Their voices are distinct, and the story flows well. Grace and Sam are interesting to read about as separate people as well as reading about their romance. Their families are fascinating and help to explain Grace and Sam's personalities and their motivations. Their attraction and romance feels genuine and was beautiful to read. The supporting characters are also distinct and well developed, and I'm looking forward to following on with all of them in Linger, the next book in the series.

The other thing that really stood out for me in this story is the descriptions of the woods. They are described so beautifully and vividly and are such an amazing setting for this story, it wouldn't be the same without it.

I will definitely read Linger, and now also Lament and Ballad, Maggie Stiefvater's other series about Faeries.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant Love Story   September 6, 2010
Bookpeople Brenda
At first I couldn't get into Shiver as it starts off with a girl being dragged by wolves to eat. Then it jumps to the point-of-view of the werewolf boy with yellow eyes. This kind of back and forth narration can be irritating, and it was at first, but I got used to it. The writing was not extraordinary nor was it the best, but it was sufficient in telling the story, which is a different take on werewolf lore. Instead of the usual werewolf story, werewolves in Stiefvater's book are wolves for half the year and then human for the other half. This obviously can lead to problems in a relationship with a human. All in all, it is a poignant love story.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it!   September 5, 2010

This book is GOOD. I really enjoyed the style of writing, very descriptive. You feel as if you live in the town and know the characters personally. I read it in 48 hours because I couldn't put it down. I only gave it 4 stars because I wish it were longer.
