This book is designed to provide you with the information you need to effectively use these tools. Whether you are using SharePoint as an intranet or business solution platform, you will learn how to use the resources (such as lists, libraries, and sites) and services (such as publishing, workflow, and policies) that make up these environments. Information and process owners will be given the knowledge they need to build and manage solutions. In this book, Seth Bates and Tony Smith walk you through the components and capabilities that make up a SharePoint 2010 environment. Their expertise shines as they provide step-by-step instructions for using and managing these elements, as well as recommendations for how to best leverage them. As a reader, you’ll then embrace two common SharePoint uses, document management and project information management, and walk through creating samples of these solutions, understanding the challenges these solutions are designed to address and the benefits they can provide. The authors have brought together this information based on their extensive experience working with these tools and with business users who effectively leverage these technologies within their organizations. These experiences were incorporated into the writing of this book to make it easy for you to gain the knowledge you need to make the most of the product. | Customer Reviews: Just to get you started July 6, 2010 SixPointSteve 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a good book to get you started with SharePoint 2010. I am a Sharepoint Administrator which this book does not cover those features. What it does do is give the end user a great place to start to learn features and concepts. Administrator guides are due out this fall...Recommended for anyone new to Sharepoint 2010.

This is a useful book for SharePoint users to start using SharePoint 2010. Whether you are an existing SharePoint user or new to SharePoint, the book has clear and concise guide to help you understand and learn SharePoint 2010. It starts with basic information and concepts for lists, libraries, workflow, and web parts. Then you can follow the example to create and personalize your own sites.
Inspiring and fun way to learn about SP 2010!! July 1, 2010 Heather L. Mcauliffe (Washington DC) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
In relation to SharePoint 2010, this book seems to have it all: detailed knowledge of SharePoint 2010 and how it relates to MOSS 2007 as well as .NET programming, step-by-step instructions that actually work, a humourous conversational tone that engages the readers, practical advice from start to finish -- for example in Chapter 1, the author recommends that to avoid being considered as a terrorist while you are in-flight - you should not using Hyper-V on your laptop while you are traveling, as it does not do sleep-mode well and this creates a challenge when you must "turn off all devices". The book also offers lots of great tips on Sandboxed solutions and details on WebParts and communications between same, SharePoint Data, including a chapter on Business Connectivity Services and its ease of use compared with MOSS BDC. A great foundation for Business Intelligence and Security are also included. As many of us will be working on MOSS to SP2010 solutions in the coming years, this book is a gem!

Great for users looking to understand SharePoint 2010 June 4, 2010 BH 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
My organization has been keeping pace with the SharePoint platform as it grows and evolves. These authors again have not dissappointed. This is a straight forward read that will help most users understand the new 2010 platform. Advanced users in particular will find the business soluton chapters helpful for applying and undestanding the new 2010 techniques.
