Don't Miss It January 26, 2010 Kayla Lamoreaux (my computer) Seth Godin truly has a gift to help you see things from an entirely new perspective you never before considered - or conveniently ignored. Linchpin is a timely book that should be on the MUST READ LIST for every person who wants to successfully ride the wave of change that is occurring in our economy and workplaces. This book contains the things you need to think about now - things that will help you best position yourself, your business, and/or your career so that no matter what changes come along, you can adapt to always be valuable and indispensable.
Seth recently wrote a post on his blog entitled "It's Not The Rats You Need To Worry About" where he said, "If you want to know if a ship is going to sink, watch what the richest passengers do...If your ship is sinking, get out now. By the time the rats start packing, it's way too late." ([...])
Linchpin can be a lifeboat for you - teaching you what you need to know to understand how to turn difficulty into opportunities - IF you read it.
Seth Godin's Best Book Yet! January 26, 2010 Ed McLaughlin 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Seth Godin is widely viewed as one of the sharpest marketing minds of our time. In my opinion, he's more than that - he is a true change agent. His latest book, Linchpin, could not have come along at a better time.
We're in the midst of the 22nd recession since 1900, and so far it's been an ugly one. And while the rate of job losses has recently slowed, many companies are still in retreat - freezing salaries, raising health-care premiums, and eliminating training programs.
If you're a linchpin, this is an incredible opportunity.
I was privileged to attend the book launch in New York City. During the presentation, I learned that the original title of the book was The Chef, The Cook, and The Dishwasher.
In a restaurant, the dishwasher is clearly the lowest job available. Someone will always have to fill this kind of role, but that someone doesn't have to be you.
The cook follows a recipe - make a particular dish one way, every time. Everyone can follow instructions, so it should come as no surprise that there are a surplus of people available to perform these jobs. And since a cook doesn't create any real value, they have little hope of making more than an average living.
The chef is different altogether. A chef may be aware of recipes, but chooses not to follow them. Which means that unlike the cook, her best work is completely unknown. By creating instead of following, she turns her work into art.
In the post-industrial age, the artist is the one in demand. Linchpin is the type of book that will push you down this path.
Baby Boomers - Especially Entrepreneurs - Seth Godin's New Book Linchpin Is For You January 26, 2010 Shallie M. Bey, Jr. (Arlington, Texas) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
How can I make such a statement to you baby boomers? After all, Seth says:
- I didn't set out to get you to quit your job
- or to persuade you to become an entrepreneur
- or merely to change the world.
Yet, he also says: ...fearful employees are in pain. They're in pain because they're overlooked, underpaid, laid off, and stressed out."
"You weren't born to be a cog in the great industrial machine. You were trained to be a cog."
" You were promised: Follow these instructions and you don't have to think".
Now I ask, who can he be speaking to other than baby boomers. Who has lived under this training longer than any other generations? All of our lives, we baby boomers have been "pushed to produce, to conform, and to consume". That is why 77+ million of us are looking to end our work careers. That is why many of us are seeking an alternative to traditional retirement and searching for advice on how to start your baby boomer business. We don't want anymore "attendance based compensation".
We want the choice to be indispensable and to make a difference. As consumers, employees, and business owners - we do not want to participate in the old model "of racing to make average stuff for average people in huge quantities".
As baby boomer entrepreneurs, we are starting baby boomer businesses at an amazing clip. We are already half of all the self employed business owners in America. Baby boomer women are leading the way at business formation at about twice the rate of men.
Seth doesn't promise you a map. What he does provide is a compass to point you in the right direction. He does advise you to focus on the audience you choose. He advises you to listen to them to the exclusion of all others. He advises making these customers happy. "Let the other guys pound sand".
Baby boomers, especially entrepreneurs...this one is for you!
Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?
Make A Difference January 26, 2010 Michael C. Sturdivant (Folsom, CA) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have noticed a lot of people are writing very long reviews. That's fine, but unnecessary. This book is about choice. Do you want to make a difference or do you want to follow. Most jobs require followers - follow the rules, the dress code, the map, and AT BEST you'll retire with an uneventful career. Or do you want to make a difference and become a linchpin or indispensable? Are you interested in changing your work into a rewarding and enjoyable passion.
Do you want to lead? Do you want to make a difference? Do you want your job to become your passion? Do you want to take the road less travelled? If yes, then read this book. You'll learn about "fear" and how it works. You'll learn to how to use this "fear" to grow. You'll learn it's fine to fail. You'll learn it's good to stick your neck out and stand out.
Not interested in standing out? Are you happy with following others? Don't read this book! It will scare you.
In the end, make a difference at work not because you should, but because it's in you. Drive your passion, don't just drive to work.
Why only four stars? Because I believe perfection sucks. I always want to strive to do better. I don't want Seth to get soft and stop writing books.
Beyond expectations... But that is Seth!!! January 26, 2010 Edward Abel (USA) This book brings together many thoughts we have about business, life, people, purpose, mission, execution and evolution. The why, what and how of it all...
Seth pulled it all together and wrapped it up in words... We appreciate you Seth!
