1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   May 28, 2010

I live in rural Maine. There is NO way to follow her ideas. Health food stores are hours away and even they don't have most of the items. I visited NYCity recently and had an opportunity to pick up a few things but she is wealthy and can afford to get what she wants/needs. She also lives in an area that has stores that can and will carry the items she recommends.

I did get some ideas and can gleam useful info from the book so it was not a total waste. She lives in a fantasy world in which so many of us do not!

5 out of 5 stars Changing My Life   May 24, 2010
Jessie M. Malone (STILLWATER, OK, US)
I am 6 chapters in, and I don't know where to begin. I love this book. It has given me so much to think about. There were so many question I didn't not know I needed to ask about what I was putting into my body. I have not read as much of the book as I would like because I keep researching different topics it covers. So far the book has been dead on with all information. The voice and tone of the writing makes the information easier to absorb. Best diet and nutrition book I have found in a long time.

I finished reading this book and promptly became a vegetarian working my way ever closer to being a vegan. This book drastically changed my life. The way it is written is very approachable and she is never preachy or condescending. There are a ton of great recipes in here to get you started and she gives you a wonderful section of what to stock in your pantry. I have recommended this book to friends and they buy it and become vegetarian and fall absolutely in love with Ms. Alicia. I like that she has a compliment website to her book as well so you can continue getting good information. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting step by step dietary aid   May 22, 2010

I'd heard about Alicia Silverstone's dramatic weight loss over the past few years and was intrigued as to how she accomplished the goal. Her book is an easy read, very simple to understand and plenty of helpful examples of why certain foods are "ugly" for your system and why plant based diets are terrific. She offers three levels of change, the easiest being Flirting with Healthful Food (adding simple whole grains to your meals daily), the next level Becoming Vegan, and the final Superhero approach. You can really pick any level and jump right in, it's that easy to follow. Though a strong supporter of PETA, she doesn't sound preachy or repetitive with her philosophy or advice. She literally explains how a plant based diet strengthens the immune system, beautifies your skin, and increases energy as well as reduces certain cancer risks. Simply put, the nasty foods, like sugars and all processed foods will do our bodies no good at all. Over time, we feel the bad effects of these foods, i.e., high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, acne, even irritable bowels and other colon irregularities. The commitment to change in Alicia's case came as she realized that eating living creatures was not only cruel to the animal, but also cruel to our own bodies, filling it with the chemicals which in many cases the animals were given to grow, or in the worst case, transferring any bacteria or disease harbored by the animals. Loads of photos and recipes enhance the book, and you will appreciate her story as you might easily see yourself in many of the situations, for instance, developing painful adult acne. Once she began this dietary change, she claims it improved nearly like magic. I learned things I didn't know before from this book, like the fact that meat is full of antibiotics since animals are raised in confined, dirty and stressful environments and are routinely given antibiotics as a preventive measure. I learned simple tips for treating myself better from within (Inner exercise) like journaling and meditation. Though I didn't take the vegan plunge and give up all meat and protein, I have significantly reduced my intake of dairy and meat while increasing fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and soy. The only things I found annoying were the long grocery lists of items which I never before kept on hand, some I'd never heard of before, and in most cases hard to locate in my local area. If there are very few organic grocers near you, it will be a challenge to find things such as: kuzu, shoyu, seitan, and daikon rounds. To make the best use of this guide, you really need to stock up on things you might normally have never kept in the kitchen and this is challenging when you don't have a health food store within a reasonable distance. However, all in all, a good book and sound, useful guidance backed up by scientific studies.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book with complicated recipes.   May 21, 2010

When I first began reading this book, I was annoyed by how peppy and chipper Ms. Silverstone seemed to be. After reading it for a little while, however, I became more and more charmed by her. I'm not claiming that I ended up loving her in every way (her light-hearted talk of "cheating" on the diet perturbed me), but I did end up loving her. This book is really inspiring. I have read it and flipped through it more than a couple times and it moves me every single time. I love reading about the positive effects that not eating dairy can have on you, or eating more vegetables and balanced meals can have on you. It just makes me feel like a lot of the world's problems could be solved by eating foods like these instead of the processed, pesticide-laden, hormonally-induced foods that most of us are used to eating now. This is the upside of the book.

The downside of the book is that the recipes are both overly simplistic and overly complicated. Some recipes call for "pizza dough" and other pre-made things like this, which I really don't like. This is frustrating for two reasons: These foods are expected to be vegan so finding them pre-made is not so easy in my mid-sized city, and it feels kind of lazy. Tell me how to make the food, Alicia! I also don't like that most every recipe has at least one (but usually more) obscure ingredient. I cannot find umeboshi plums, Alicia, so don't put them in every friggin' recipe. Lastly, there is no regard for calories in these recipes, which shows in her extensive use of oil and butter. Vegan butter may not have milk in it, but it sure has a lot of calories.

I love the idea behind this book, but I think that a better version could be made. Someone should make it.. please.
